For the ninth straight year, the Utica Community Schools Foundation for Educational Excellence is supporting the district’s College Culture through a donation to the UCS Superintendent’s Scholarship Program.

The nonprofit foundation on September 27 presented a $35,000 scholarship donation to the UCS Board of Education for the annual Superintendent's Scholarship Fund. The scholarship money is the result of the foundation's Evening of Excellence fundraiser, held each spring.

In total, the foundation has contributed more than $250,000 for scholarships.

“The energy and commitment of the UCS Foundation’s volunteers continue to open doors for our students,” Superintendent Dr. Christine Johns said. “Whether it is through this scholarship program, the annual Career Focus Luncheon or the teacher mini-grant program, the foundation’s work is creating a brighter future for our students.”

The Superintendent's Scholarship is open to all UCS seniors. Last year's program helped offset costs for 30 graduates to pursue post-secondary experiences through schools such as University of Michigan, Michigan State University, Macomb Community College, University of Chicago and University of Alabama.

Applications for 2018 graduates will be available in December.

“The UCS Foundation is proud to support the Superintendent’s Scholarship program and the district’s focus that every graduate successfully pursues post-secondary educational experiences,” said Foundation president Robert Van Camp.

More scholarships will be funded through the foundation's next annual Evening of Excellence, set for March 8, 2018 at the Palazzo Grande Banquet Center in Shelby Township. The funds also support additional experiences for the district’s visual and performing arts students.

The Evening of Excellence also supports UCS Fine Arts activities such as the elementary Honors Choir, student attendance at the Detroit Area Film Theatre and an educational experience with Detroit Institute of Arts and College for Creative Studies.

The Utica Community Schools Foundation for Educational Excellence was created in 1986 to help support meaningful educational experiences for UCS students. Since its inception 31 years ago, the foundation has distributed more than $1 million in grants and scholarships.

The UCS Foundation is an independent 501(c)(3) organization comprised of community volunteers.
