UCS applies new guidelines making school lunches more nutritious

Utica Community Schools Food Service welcomed students back this year with healthier meals that meet new federal food guidelines designed to provide nutrition children need to do their best in school. UCS school meals will continue to offer students milk, grains, proteins and fruits and vegetables, while appropriately restricting saturated fat and portion size. As the new guidelines are phased in, menu changes will also include:

  • Age-appropriate calorie limits for elementary, middle and high school students
  • Larger servings of vegetables and fruits
  • More dark green and orange/yellow vegetables; less starchy vegetables
  • More servings of beans and legumes
  • Fat-free or 1% milk; flavored milk only in fat-free
  • More whole grains
  • Gradual sodium reduction toward the goal of 740 mg on average per meal
